Android 17 Widgets Not Working with Work Profile Fix
With the release of Android 17 (OS version 17.0) on June 16, 2026, many users who have work profiles set up on their personal devices found that both personal and work profile widgets are broken. Often apps don't even appear in the widget selector. This affects not just the stock Pixel launcher but third-party launchers as well. While there were a few early workarounds, they come at a cost. The easiest is removing the work profile, but then you lose access to your company email and other resources. Some have found weird hacks/tricks that allow widgets to work until the phone is restarted.
We have found what we think is the best workaround so far: Disabling work profile widgets. It disables work profile widgets, but you can still have a work profile with apps and working personal widgets.
The following instructions are for Microsoft Intune managed devices, but other MDMs should also work. If you are using an app such as Shelter/Island to create an Android work profile, you should be able to disable widget access for work apps within that management app to accomplish something similar.
In Intune, changing the Android Enterprise > Templates > Device Restrictions setting for "Allow widgets from work profile apps" from "Enabled" to "Not configured" resolves the issue.
Note: You may need to re-create the widgets if they broke.
For our org, we duplicated the personal Android devices "Device restrictions" policy and only changed the new policy so work widgets are not enabled. Then, using device filters, applied the original policy to non-Android 17 personal devices and applied the new policy with work widgets disabled to Android 17 personal devices.
As was indicated earlier, doing this means that work widgets will not be allowed on the home screen now for Android 17 users (work calendar, etc.), but personal widgets will work as expected.
